Keeping up with the Joneses

If I had a magic wand, I would make sure no new communication tools were created/invented for the next six months. Think about it. Six months would give you the time you need to review everything that is out there today and decide what works best for you and your company, including Snapchat, Instagram, Yik-Yak and Tinder (OK, maybe not Tinder).

But there is no stopping this ongoing “communication revolution.” As a result, it is easy for professionals to feel they are “missing out” on whatever is the newest, latest, greatest, coolest communication tool. Stop worrying! You don’t need to be all things to all people (or all clients). Rather, focus on learning how to better use the tools you already likely use (email marketing, e-newsletter, an interactive website, strong LinkedIn corporate profile and LinkedIn groups engagement, etc.), and make a point to learn a bit more about one new communication vehicle every month or so.

Most importantly, ask your customers how they want to be communicated with. All the prettiest tools in the world won’t benefit you if you aren’t connecting with your audience. See what works best for them and combine that with strong content that tells your story.
